Ion chromatography quotations go wrong when the separation is decided after the instrument. Work in this order instead.

1. Analytes and ranges

List the anions or cations, the concentration range for each, and the reporting limit. A single method rarely covers both trace and major components well.

2. Matrix

High ionic strength, organic content and particulates all affect the separation and the maintenance interval. State the matrix and the preparation step.

3. Separation

Column chemistry, eluent and suppression configuration follow from the analytes. Ask for the column and the method conditions to be quoted together, not separately.

4. Detection and data

Confirm the detector, the data system and the export format. If your quality system requires audit trails, state that requirement before the quotation.

5. Installation

Eluent preparation, water quality, gas supply (if suppression requires it) and waste handling are part of the installation plan.
